2011年の東日本大震災をきっかけに宮城県石巻市で始まった石巻工房は、DIY精神と地域に根ざしたものづくりを軸に活動を続けてきました。
震災直後、限られた材料や道具を用いながら、「自分たちの暮らしに必要なものを、自分たちの手でつくる」という行為から始まった石巻工房の思想は、15年の時間を経て、日本国内だけでなく、世界各地へと広がっています。
現在石巻工房では、「Made in Local Project」として、それぞれの地域の素材、技術、人との関係性を尊重しながら、現地のパートナーと協働するものづくりを展開しています。
今回のコペンハーゲンでの展示では、東京や上海での展示と同様に石巻工房の歩みのなかで特に重要な役割を果たしてきた15点のアイコニックな家具を、dotcomとの共催により展示いたします。
単なる展示に留まらず、子どもから大人まで参加可能な「ISHINOMAKI BIRD KIT」のワークショップも行います。
家具を“完成したプロダクト”として見せるだけではなく、人が集まり、会話が生まれ、手を動かしながら時間を共有すること。石巻工房は、ものづくりを通してコミュニティを育てるという考え方を、コペンハーゲンの街のなかでも実践していきます。
会場では、映像作家にNobu Arakawa氏を迎えて制作した、商店街の店主や地域コミュニティ、ものづくりやクリエイティブ、事業創造、人材育成、文化などに関わり、まちづくりを支える石巻の方々へのインタビュー映像も放映いたします。1977年創業コペンハーゲンのオーディオブランド<Dynaudio>のスピーカーより、石巻の街の雰囲気もぜひ会場で体感ください。
石巻から始まった小さな活動は、今ではさまざまな土地や文化とつながりながら広がっています。
異なる環境であっても、地域の素材を読み取り、人との関係性を考え、必要なものを丁寧につくるという姿勢は変わりません。
15年という節目を越え、石巻工房はこれからも、各地のローカルなものづくりとともに歩み続けます。

ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY began in Ishinomaki City, Miyagi Prefecture, in the immediate aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011, as a recovery support initiative led by Keiji Ashizawa together with architects, designers, and volunteers from Japan and abroad.
Amid the uncertainty that followed the disaster, people in the affected areas used limited materials and simple tools, creating with their own hands the things needed for everyday life. Over the past 15 years, that spirit has expanded beyond Japan to communities around the world.Today, this approach continues through the “Made in Local Project,” collaborating with local partners while respecting the materials, techniques, and relationships unique to each region.
Following the exhibitions in Tokyo and Shanghai, we will present 15 iconic furniture pieces that have played particularly significant roles throughout the history of ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY. The exhibition will be held in collaboration with dotcom.
During the exhibition, workshops for the “ISHINOMAKI BIRD KIT” will be held, open to both children and adults.
Rather than simply presenting furniture as finished products, ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY sees design as a way to create places where people gather, communicate, and share time together through making. In Copenhagen as well, the exhibition will become a space where community emerges through craftsmanship and conversation.
The exhibition will also feature an interview film created with film director Nobu Arakawa, documenting voices from Ishinomaki - including local shop owners, community members, and people engaged in manufacturing, creative practices, business development, education, culture, and community-building. Through speakers by Copenhagen-based audio brand Dynaudio, founded in 1977, visitors will also be able to experience the atmosphere and sounds of Ishinomaki within the exhibition space.
What began as a small local initiative in Ishinomaki has continued to expand through connections with different regions and cultures around the world.
Even across changing environments, the spirit remains unchanged: carefully understanding local materials, relationships, and ways of living, and transforming them into meaningful objects.
Fifteen years on, ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY continues its journey together with local makers and communities around the world.

About ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY
ISHINOMAKI LABORATORY is a furniture brand founded in Ishinomaki, Miyagi Prefecture, following the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. In the aftermath of the disaster, local residents gathered to create the things they needed with their own hands, establishing a place rooted in DIY spirit and community collaboration.
While continuing to collaborate with designers from Japan and abroad, Ishinomaki Laboratory has evolved beyond a furniture brand into a platform that connects local production around the world through the “Made in Local” project.
